Bridge Construction and Repair

Bridges on local roads, canals and trails have to be built right and kept in service for decades. At V&H Construction, we handle bridge construction and repair for public agencies and general contractors, from new pedestrian bridges to the rehabilitation of existing structures. We’re FDOT-prequalified for minor and intermediate bridges, their repair and rehabilitation, and bridge deck overlays.

Call (239) 841-6400 or invite V&H to bid to review your bridge plans.

STA 1+00  ·  SCOPE

Define the Bridge Scope

Section A–A  /  structure limits. Show the span, the approaches and what the bridge crosses.

A pedestrian bridge beside an existing road and a full replacement of a roadway structure are very different packages. Show us the structure, the approaches and whatever runs beneath it.

01

New bridges

Minor and intermediate bridge construction, from foundations and substructure to the deck and approaches.

02

Pedestrian bridges

Pedestrian bridges for sidewalks, trails and shared-use paths, with their concrete approaches.

03

Repair and rehabilitation

Repair and rehabilitation of existing bridges, including pile jackets and epoxy and grout injection.

04

Deck overlays

Overlays that renew the riding surface of an existing bridge deck.

05

Piles and foundations

Pile driving for bridge foundations and related structures.

The structural plans and the owner’s specifications define the work. Point us to the sheets for the portion you’d like priced.

STA 2+00  ·  INTERFACES

Section B–B  ·  Adjoining work

Approaches, Water and Traffic

A bridge project reaches past the structure itself: approach slabs, guardrail, sidewalk connections, drainage at the ends and work in or over the water. Include the plan sheets for those items and any permit conditions for work over the waterway.

Roadway approaches are covered on our roadwork page, and walls and shoreline protection on marine construction. For sidewalk connections, see concrete.

Traffic, Permits and Timing

Tell us how traffic, pedestrians and boats are handled during construction: detours, lane closures, phased work or a navigation channel that has to stay open.

Share the permit conditions that affect the schedule, and give the bid due date separately from the construction window.

STA 4+00  ·  QUESTIONS

Bridge Construction Questions

01 Is V&H prequalified with FDOT for bridge work? −

Yes. Our prequalification covers minor bridges, intermediate bridges, repair and rehabilitation of both, and bridge deck overlays. You can confirm the current work classes on FDOT’s prequalified contractor list.

02 Do you build pedestrian bridges? +

Yes. On Bell Blvd in Lehigh Acres, we built a new sidewalk with a steel pedestrian bridge across the canal. Our project gallery shows it from staging to completion.

03 What affects the cost of a bridge project? +

Span length and type, foundations, work over water or traffic, the approaches and the schedule all shape the price. A project-specific number comes from the structural plans and specifications.

04 Can a bridge stay open during repairs? +

Often, with phased work and traffic control. The project documents usually say what has to stay open, so include those requirements and the repair plan can fit around them.

05 What information helps with a bridge repair bid? +

The latest inspection report, the repair details on the plans and any load or lane restrictions. Together they show the condition of the structure and the scope the owner expects.
