Marine Construction and Shoreline Work
Southwest Florida’s canals, rivers and bays put roads, outfalls and property right at the water’s edge. At V&H Construction, we handle marine construction for public agencies, developers and commercial owners: seawalls, steel sheet pile and retaining walls, riprap shoreline protection, docks, piers and boat ramps, and mechanical dredging. We’re based in Lehigh Acres and work across Southwest Florida.
Call (239) 841-6400 or invite V&H to bid to talk through your waterfront project.
STA 1+00 · SCOPE
Define the Marine Scope
Section A–A / shoreline. Mark the wall line, the water side and the upland side.
Waterfront work is defined by where the shoreline is now and where the plans put it. Show us the wall or shoreline alignment, the water depths and what sits on the upland side.
01
Seawalls
New and replacement seawalls along canals, waterways and shorelines.
02
Sheet pile and retaining walls
Steel sheet pile, retaining walls and tieback walls that hold back soil at the water’s edge or along a grade change.
03
Riprap shoreline protection
Riprap and rubble riprap that protect slopes, outfalls and shorelines from erosion.
04
Docks and piers
Public and commercial docks and piers for waterfront sites.
05
Boat ramps
Public and commercial boat ramps and their approaches.
06
Mechanical dredging
Removing sediment from canals and waterways to restore depth, within the limits of the permit.
Permits and the engineer’s plans control what can be built at the water’s edge. Point us to the sheets for the work you want priced.

Work at the Water’s Edge
Marine projects meet roads, drainage outfalls and utilities on the upland side, and tides, wildlife and permit conditions on the water side. Include the plan sheets for both, along with the permits issued for the work.
For outfalls and storm pipe that discharge at a wall, see storm drain repair. Bridges over canals are on bridge construction, and upland stormwater on our drainage page.

Permits, Access and Timing
Tell us how the site is reached: from the land, from the water or both. Note any limits on barge access, staging or working hours, and the conditions in the environmental permits.
Some permits restrict when in-water work can happen. Give us the bid due date and those windows separately so the schedule is clear from the start.

STA 4+00 · QUESTIONS
Marine Construction Questions
01 Do you build seawalls? −
Yes. We build new and replacement seawalls, along with steel sheet pile, retaining and tieback walls. Send the engineer’s plans and the permit, and tell us whether an existing wall comes out first.
02 Can you build docks and boat ramps? +
Yes. We build public and commercial docks, piers and boat ramps. Include the plans, the permit and how the site can be reached.
03 What affects the cost of marine construction? +
Wall length and height, the wall type, water depth, soil conditions, access from land or water, dredging volumes and permit conditions all shape the price. A project-specific number comes from the plans and the permit.
04 Do I need permits before marine work starts? +
Most work at or below the water line needs permits from one or more agencies, and those permits set conditions on how and when the work happens. Share what has been issued or applied for with your invitation.
05 Can you protect an eroding slope or outfall? +
Yes. We place riprap and rubble riprap to protect slopes, outfalls and shorelines. The plans set the stone size and the limits of the protection.

Road work beside the water
Some of our road and drainage projects run along canals. On Gillot Blvd, where the road crosses the Blitman Waterway, our gallery shows the roadway reconstruction from equipment staged on the approaches to the finished crossing.

Terms on Waterfront Plans
Four terms that come up on most seawall and shoreline plans.
Term 01
Sheet pile
Interlocking steel sections driven into the ground to form a continuous wall.
Term 02
Tieback
An anchor behind a wall that ties it into the soil to resist the load on its face.
Term 03
Wall cap
The concrete beam along the top of a seawall that ties the piles or sheets together.
Term 04
Toe protection
Riprap or other material placed at the base of a wall or slope so erosion can’t undermine it.
